Recording Studio/Record Label

Analog and Digital Recording

Website

I started Monster Island in the Fall of 1994 in a tiny space in NYC's Meat Packing District. In January of 1995 I launched the web based record label to sell White Courtesy Telephone CDs based on the impending publicity provided by a Details Magazine article written by Rob Tannenbaum chronicling his, my and four other band members experiences over two years.

Since then the studio has moved and grown to be one NYC's premiere mid-size recording rooms with the highest quality analog and digital recording gear available. The credit list includes, Avril Lavigne, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Ryan Adams, Coheed and Cambria, Gym Class Heroes, Cobra Starship, Richard Muller and The Takeover UK. Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" reached the number one spot in the Billboard Hot 100 and Pop 100 in the same week. Both the singal and the album have been certified Platinum by the RIAA. Two of Richard Muller's albums have gone multi platinum in both the Czech and Slovak Republics. In 2005 I joined thin along with Omar hakim, Will Lee, Hiram Bullock and Clifford Carter for his "44" tour.

I and currently finsihing production on the The Takeover UK's debut album due for release in 2008.

Writing

Tape Op Magazine

Website

I began writing for Tape Op magazine immediately after reading my first copy in 2000. I found it to be the best source for creative stimulation in the field of recording and immediately wanted to be a part of it. I started by reviewing equipment and expanded to writing feature articles such as Analog Tape as a Signal Processor and an in depth interview with mix engineer Michael Brauer on his multi-buss compression techniques which has become one of the definitive text on mix compression and is still researched regularly by engineers of all skill levels.

2007 has brought new developments and techniques, including Two Stage Compression, which is the culmination of an addition four years of compression experimentation and will be in the 2007 AES issue. Additionally there will be the first video version of a Tape Op article available on the web and YouTube to coincide with this article.

I have been the moderator for every Tape Op Conference Compressor panel as well as developing panels and potluck studio demos on how to use distortion artistically. I have an extensive list of gear reviews and articles in the works.
